Looking Back at 2016

With every New Year, I like to look back at the previous year and reflect on the highs, the lows, the good and the bad. I feel like this is a great way to gain more perspective about the things that worked out for me and the things that didn’t. It makes me want to achieve and push more and by analyzing what has happened, it helps me to move forward.

2016, like any year, was an interesting one. When I first think about my acting, I don’t feel like I accomplished everything that I wanted to. I didn’t get a part on one of the Chicago shows, nor did I book a national commercial or score as many auditions as I would have liked. I wanted to average two booked gigs a month and sometimes that average was zero.

But before I start drowning myself in self pity, as I reflect more, I have accomplished a lot more than I give myself credit for. I may not have booked a part on one of the Chicago shows, but I did have the opportunity to audition for some of them a few times. Most recently, I even auditioned for the casting director of Chicago Med and she really liked me! So who knows what that encounter might lead to in the new year.

Last year, I took my first trip to Los Angeles, California by myself in order to shoot with a photographer for new headshots! Gratefully, the trip was a success and I’ve booked a lot of jobs off of my new headshots. Had I not taken that leap of faith and made such a bold move, I may ended up further behind in my goals than where I am now.

I may not have gotten as many auditions I wanted, but I consistently had at least a couple a month and that’s more than when I first started out. And some of those auditions were for some major brands too like Modelo, KMart, Burger King, Volkswagen and Gatorade. I’ve become more comfortable with the auditioning process and have been asked to sing at them, do flips, and some of them have been last minute.

I’ve established a closer relationship with my agents and have let go of ones that weren’t working out for me. I’ve even reconnected with my agents back in Minnesota and have recently booked some good work with them. The Volkswagen gig was with them! I’ve had more print jobs this year like Fed Ex and even had a few out of town in Wisconsin.

So looking back now, I guess I have accomplished more than I realized. Looking ahead, I hope to land more jobs, book at least one project a month, keep getting jobs in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and hopefully book one of the Chicago shows. And more commercials and another trip to California would be fun too!

It’s easy to get caught up in the mis-steps of life and the failures of things that we haven’t accomplished. But it’s in those times that I remind myself of what I have achieved and everyday I’m getting closer to my dreams. Truly, deep down in my heart, I feel like the best is yet to come!
