Playing a Villain

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to be apart of a new web series called “Project: Nightwing” which is exactly as it sounds with Batman’s sidekick, Robin. I played a shady businessman who was, of course, up to no good. I was in the very first scene of the show, in a cold warehouse, dressed in a black suit. Now, I’m typically a smiley, upbeat, positive guy and try to avoid all things shady so playing a villain is new for me. But I welcomed the challenge and think that I managed to pull the scenes off great.

I got this part because the director was looking for someone specific that had some stunt work experience and while I don’t have tons of experience, I have done some stunt work in one of my acting classes. I submitted my acting reel and just like that – I got the part! This speaks volumes of how important it is to get as much experience as you can. I had no idea that me doing stunt work in an acting class would one day land me a part. And my acting reel helped a lot too.

I even had to handle a gun at one point, pointing it at Nightwing. Of course, the good guy always prevails and a short fight scene ensured that left me, the evil businessman, knocked out cold. But I did manage to give a few snide comments before my demise, having a little monologue towards the end there, insulting the main character saying:

I thought we would catch a break since the Bat has better things to do in Gotham than to deal with us. But even worse I have to deal with his little boy-wonder sidekick. No matter, good businessmen always come prepared.” And that’s when I pulled out the gun. Fun stuff!

As an actor, I think it’s important to flex your muscles and do things that are out of your comfort zone and different. For me, it’ll be good to see the scenes play out. One of the crew guys later told me that he thought I was “cold and cruel” which is a good compliment, considering that’s what I was going for! Above all, it was just a fun experience and another opportunity to flex my acting muscles. After all, it’s my love of acting that inspires me to do keep doing this. And playing something that’s totally different from my everyday personality is fun. I had the chance to explore my dark side for a little bit. So, it was good to be bad. Even if it was just for a little bit.
